I never wondered before about the phrase "bare foot and pregnant." I suppose I thought it had to do with being a house wife and not needing shoes on account of nowhere to go. Now I know the truth. I have places to go, but most of the time my shoes don't go with me. For the past 2 months I have increasingly eshewed my "real" shoes in favor of house shoes. For the past few weeks it has ben an exclusive relationship; shopping, work, special events- all have been attended by my house shoes.

I would like to make a resolution to be a better blogger, but that probably won't happen. I've been spending a lot of time cleaning, organizing, unpacking, repacking, washing, reading, knitting, watching TV, (a little bit of working) and a lot of sleeping.
Vacation is so good.
I just finished my "Baby Shawl" which is a triangular baby blanket. I'm almost finished with the little green baby sweater, and then I'll move on to finish all the baby toys I started and didn't finish some time ago. I will make a commitment to no new yarn- not when I have so very much stuffed everywhere imaginable. Also no new fabric- I think I'm a hoarder. It's awful.
No new books- except the crafty books that I really need! :) I'm trying to read through my books and send them on their ways. I've come the realization that I like empty space. I mean I love stuff, but I also really like not cluttered.
It's not easy by myself, harder with D and I feel nearly impossible with a baby, but I will make my small efforts.

Messed up week
It’s been a really really messed up week
Seven days of torture, seven days of bitter
And my girlfriend went and cheated on me . . . no wait, I don't have a girlfriend.
What I do have is a $300 ER bill, a $1400 truck tires and repair bill, a $100 vet bill and somewhere between a $600 and $1200 car repair bill (finding out Monday if my warranty is still in place.)
La la la, whatever, la la la, it doesn’t matter, la la la, oh well, la la la
DEB took his truck in for tires and found out he needed break work and some other stuff, which we couldn't afford, so we didn't get.
On Wednesday morning he woke up with severe pain and concluded he probably had another kidney stone. He called the doctor, took some 11 year old pain killers and sent me off to work. When I got back he said "We need to go the the ER now." 3 hours and $300 later we had new pain killers and some pee filters. The pain mysteriously disappeared and hasn't been back since, sans drugs.
Friday Louie had to go to the vet ER because he had some kind of seizure. He couldn't focus his eyes and wouldn't respond. The vet said she didn't know exactly was the problem was, but he was fine by the time he left a few hours later. She said watch him and if has more problems, take him to the regular vet for testing.
Saturday my car's big red exclamation point in a triangle light came on. DEB was driving and had to have it towed to a dealership. They said it was a warning light about getting the 120,000 mile check up or maybe I got too low on gas? Which was strange because no warning lights came on for 24 hours after it both got low and I filled it up and drove it 50+ miles. Crackpot Toyota people. They did an expensive diagnostic, said it needed lots of stuff, gave DEB a 2011 Prius rental and said check back on Monday to find out how much it will be.
This week gave me a headache.

I went to the Doctor today. I started coughing just as he walked in.
"You were diagnosed with asthma when you were a kid." (not a question)
"No."
"You should have been."
I think I just had a 'House' moment.
I said, "I have fall allergies."
He said, "Among other things."
I've never even seen this man before!
He said, "You know you are married to a nerd."
I said, "Yes, I know." (Insightful man after all.)
He said, "I'm going to send the nurse in to give you a test. If you don't pass it you should go to the emergency room."
I passed.
He said, "Well, it looks like you are getting enough oxygen, I'm going to give you an antibiotic so you don't get pneumonia. Keep taking over the counter allergy and cough meds. Good luck!"
That was one of the strangest doctor visits I've ever had.

It has happened. The 80s styles are back in the worst possible ways. I was at McDonald's yesterday and for whatever reason there were about a million high school students there too. One girl was dressed like she had just come from the staring roll in the 1980s.
At first I thought she was dressed for a play, but when I looked around I noticed hints of her 'style' on the other girls too. The off the shoulder shirts, tights, raglan sleeves here and there and in neutral colors one can ignore it, pretend it's not happening, but this one girl- I should have taken a picture.
She was wearing pink tennis shoes, purple legwarmers, blue tights, a jean mini skirt, a gray off the shoulder shirt, with a black and neon splatter tank top underneath. She had her hair up in a side pony tale secured by an enormous red scrunchie. She had a neon green headband and those big plastic pink and green sunglasses that were popular in the day. She finished off her look with blue eye shadow and a pink purse.
The only additions or changes she could have made were bigger hair, a banana clip and slouchie socks (2 pair in different colors.) Woe is me- this is really happening.

I was driving up the hill to my apartment yesterday when I saw this little kid "racing" the cars going up the hill. I decided I should slow down, rev my engine and let him "win." But, I couldn't, there was a car behind me. I didn't want to make the driver mad. You never want to anger drivers in my neighborhood. It's a little too shady for that. Anyway, I started thinking, "Is it even possible to rev the engine on this car?" I've had this car for three years and I've never tried to rev the engine.
Before I got this Prius I drove a 1985 Nissan Z. It had a big engine and a manual transmission. That car sounded like it was going fast just sitting in the driveway. I revved the engine regularly, just to hear how cool it sounded.
When I pulled into my parking spot at home I put the car in park and stepped on the gas petal. The engine turned off. It was as though my car were saying, "Uh- no I'm not going to do that. I'm not that kind of car." So I put it in drive and put one foot on the break and one foot on the gas. My car turned back on, (obligingly) and purred. "mmmmmmm" "mmmmmmmm" I had to turn off the radio and roll down the windows to hear it.
That Z is laughing at my Prius from the junk yard.
So, now I know, the answer to "Can I rev my car?" is "No."

Sometimes I ask the dogs questions.
"Do you want a treat?"
"Do you want to go outside?"
"What was that sound?"
"Did you do this?"
"Where's your toy?"
Buzz responds as a normal dog should. He barks, wags his tail, runs in circles, starts doing random tricks or hides in his box, depending on the question (more importantly the tone of the question.)
Louie some times takes cues from Buzz, but usually just sits there and stares at me as though he were trying to communicate with his tiny mind. It's like I can almost get what he's trying to say . . . but no. A few times he has stared at me for a while, and then purposefully walked over the computer as though he had decided the charade was up and he would type his message out, but just before he reaches the keyboard he turns around, like "No, that would be showing them too much."

The other day I was at a friend's house. Her little girl ran in and announced it was "FREEZING" outside! "It's so cold, there is ICE on the grass! It's probably going to SNOW!" (It was in the mid 70s)
What has the hottest summer EVER done to the weather sense of the children?
Ok she is a rather dramatic child. One day I commented on the monkeys in the living room. Her mother explained that they had to be banished from her daughter's room each night because one night the daughter came out all hysterical and saying she couldn't sleep in there because the monkeys kept slapping her. Nice by day, naughty by night sock monkeys!
I don't know about you, but I believe her. I don't trust monkeys.

School starts soon. Vacation is never long enough. Even with the meager list of things I wanted to accomplish- most of them are left undone.
I'll teach a seminar tomorrow to 20 new MBA students in TCU's Neeley School of Business. My job is to remind them how to read. :)
I'm offering suggestions on how to read faster, remember more and take notes, specifically while working on case studies.

Yesterday Louie fell down the stairs. It was horrifying. His tiny little fuzzy foot slipped off the first step and he bounced down every hard wooden step until he reached the bottom. Left side-Right side-Back-Belly-Left . . . I was having visions of a toddler bouncing down the stairs in a similar way- how it would break little bones and crack a tiny skull. Louie, however bounced to the landing and got up and and looked around like, "Nobody saw that right?!" The whole time he was bouncing down I was standing at the top of the stairs saying, "Dog! Stairs! Falling!" When I got down the stairs I picked him up and checked him out, he didn't seem to be any worse for the ware. Resilient little critter.

Last week we went to see Johnny about our rings. Johnny is the jeweler Daniel worked with to design my opal ring, which I love. Daniel bought the opal over 10 years ago looking forward to putting it into an engagement ring. When he proposed he said this was the ‘surprise’ ring and we could get a diamond later. At first I thought I would wait for the diamond. But after talking to Johnny (an ultimate salesman) I decided to get him to make a diamond ring for me too. He’s a character, and always busy traveling and buying and selling. There’s no telling when Johnny might have time- so I figured this was my chance to get him to make a ring that corresponds to my opal ring with some of his signature touches as a jeweler. The rings should be ready next week.
This week has been busy. I’ve been on spring break, but I’ve been busy with wedding stuff every day. The day before yesterday we stuffed, sealed, addressed and stamped about 400 invitations. There were about 100 missing from the print run, so we can pick those up tomorrow and have the invites out this weekend. Our invitations are also one of a kind designs made my Jessica my soon to be sister-in-law.
Yesterday Daniel and I got our engagement pictures taken. I think they are going to turn out really well. We went to Handley, the little town where we will get married, and took some pictures with a caboose (the town symbol) then we went to a few parks in Arlington.
Our photographer is about 12 years old. I told him I got a haircut and the woman styled it so that it looked like I just walked out of 1990. He said, “Oh, that’s when I was born!” Oh well, his pictures are awesome, so what do I care how old he is?
Today I was with Jessica’s mother because she will be making my veil. Again, it will be amazing.
Tomorrow is Daniel’s birthday- so we will be out and about for that and that’s the end of my spring break. Tragic.
We did decide to go to Spain for our honeymoon though! Wow- that will be amazing, awesome, fantastico!

I want this: I don't know what I'd do with it. It costs between $18-65 per skein. That's pretty pricey, but it is made from silk and baby goat hair. That's something right? It's called 'water lily' and that color fascinates me.
I currently have more yarn than I could knit or crochet in 2 years (probably more, I'm rather slow.) Nevertheless, I want to join a yarn club. What a strange notion.
Yarn is my addiction.
I'm currently working on a blanket which I love. Double love. I started from the center and I'm working out, so it doesn't have a set size. It is black and rainbow colors in long stripes. It's square, and the yarn is cheap acrylic, but it is so soft and light and warm and pretty. I love it. I've taken some pictures, but haven't posted them. I think it looks better every time I add to it, so I hesitate to put up old pictures. I think this will be the first blanket I keep for myself.

Last night a bunch of us went to "Love and War in Texas." It's a restaurant which serves Tex-Mex and Tex-Tex food. They have Barbara Bush's fried green beans in the appetizers and things like long horn steaks, rattle snake and wild boar for entrees. We went because Daniel wanted to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the independence of Texas. He get's these ideas- but really, who am I to argue with deep fried green beans? (Yum)
When we got there we saw a car with eyelashes or headlight lashes to be exact. I decided I needed some so I left a note on the car with my email address. She totally wrote back and I have already ordered my pair along with the matching rhinestone liner.
At the table we talked about wedding things, and work things and of course Texas things. Someone at the table declared that Daniel had enough Texas pride to cover both of us since I insisted on being "yankeefied." He was just jealous because I knew the answer to the crossword puzzle clue "the port of Pennsylvania." Duh- there's only 1!
My students often ask why they can understand when I speak English, but they can't understand when people outside (Texans) speak English. I tell them that Texans have a different kind of English than I do. I speak 'standard English' Texas of course speak Texan English. I have to remind them that I'm not Texan, I can understand Texans- I've been here a long time- and I've met a few Texans out of context in my travels. (Hi) Sometimes I teach them what I call "special Texan words," like "Howdy Y'all." They can't believe Texas has it's own words, but I assure them that if they go to another state and use these special words someone will surely ask them if they learned English in Texas. (Imagine the fun of having a room full of Koreans, Chinese people, Arabs, Russians and South Americans repeating after me, "How-dy Y'all!" I tell them they'll fit right in. :0)
I have a great time telling all my little foreign friends about Texas- and how special it is. The lone star flag is very interesting to them along with the six flags of Texas. I love asking them what they think the six flags are for. Sometimes the give outlandish answers, only hoping there was a time that Japan owned Texas. Imagine southwestern samurai eating fish tacos.

When I was in high school I developed hay fever allergies. It was a mystery at first, I thought I had a crazy cold for about a month until I realized it was possible to suddenly develop allergies. I had a few allergy related sinus infections in college- I move around a lot after that so I don't recall having a problem until about 4 or 5 years ago when I started getting a yearly allergy/sinus infection attack. I normally get it in the fall- I figured it was ragweed- famous in TX for it's allergy inducing pollen.
I didn't have a problem this year though- until now. Late winter/early spring allergies. In the past I tried to wait it out. I waited for 5 days this time. I thought it might dry up after a few days since it didn't seem really serious. Boy was I wrong. I don't know that this was really as much about allergies this time as it was the infection. I don't know much about sinuses, but there must be a front and a back. I've had 'front' sinus problems before. Pain in my forehead and around my eyes. Drainage from my nose like water works etc. What I have going on now is the 'back' kind. It's all in my throat and down my neck and up to my ears.
I'm coughing and hacking and wheezing and retching and making any manner of awful sounds as though I were orally birthing an alien race. Some of the stuff that comes up sort of looks like that too. I went to the doctor yesterday and he gave me antibiotics, nasal spray, allergy meds, and codeine cough syrup. He said the syrup would help me sleep, so don't take it if I'm going to drive. I took it last night before bed and I swear it made me twitchy. Great. I'm one of the freaks for whom codeine causes "excitability." Oh well, I guess I don't have to worry about driving after I take it.

PS I want to see Gnomeo and Juliette!

Today is the fifth snow day of the year- of the month, with in the past 10 days. We were off Tuesday through Friday last week. It warmed up and melted off for the Super Bowl in Arlington, Monday and Tuesday this week were good, last night it froze up and snowed some more.
Some people at work were all "I hope we don't have a snow day again tomorrow! I was going crazy staying at home!" Well, it's pretty safe to say that I was routing for disaster yesterday. I 100% enjoyed last week at home, and I'm sure to enjoy today at home as well.
I realize that I have enough projects in my apartment that I could be under house arrest for 2 months before I ran out of things to do. Actually I wouldn't run out, I would just get tired of doing those same things.
While not in school I watched TV and movies, crocheted, knitted, painted, cooked, cleaned, played computer games, sewed, organized and read a lot. It was fantastic really. Louie was with me (Buzz was with Daniel.) so I took him out a few times a day. He would run across the snow, realize again that he hated it, pee without lifting his leg and come back and stand on my foot until we went back in.
Today my plan is to make lemon bars with the left over egg yokes I have from the Texas shaped waffles I made over the weekend.
I will also go out to do my private tutoring. Daniel worked all night on the emergency line, he said the roads aren't so bad. I hope to finish a few more little project that I started last week. I already finished my book. It was the Robber Bride, which I don't recommended. It's one of those books I've had for years, and I felt obligated to read. 1. because someone gave it to me 2. I really enjoyed another book by the same author 3. because I hate to get rid of books before I know what's in them. I mean, if I read a book and then get rid of it, I always know I can get another copy if I want it again. But if I get rid of a book without reading it I feel I've wasted my potential with that book. It seems I have book issues. Clearly I could get another copy of that book I didn't read too. But if I had a copy and got rid of it and then had to buy another copy only to find out I didn't like that book I would be mad about wasting my money (possibly twice.)
My goal is to read though my books on my shelf so that I can decrease the number of books I have to carry around when I move to just the ones I really love. I have a Kindle now so I can keep electronic copies of all other books I feel the need to access.
Time for lemon bars now! Let's hope I don't burn them.

The Super Bowl will be here Sunday- This weekend was beautiful- but starting tomorrow night an "arctic front" is moving in. Looks like it will be a wintery Super Bowl this year. Snow, sleet, ice and temperatures in the teens. Ah Texas- if I were feeling more creative I'd write an ode to your wacky weather.
I don't understand where all my time goes. Thank you Jesus that I don't have a 9-5 type job. How would I accomplish anything? Not that I accomplish much now. It's bed time already and I only accomplished one thing off my "to do" list!
Pooh.

About a year ago I started making a baby blanket. It's not for anyone- I wanted to try out a pattern, and I happened to have 8 balls of baby yarn that someone gave me. I would never have picked this yarn. It's sort of old fashioned looking, and a little bit scratchy. Maybe the scratchiness will go away when it's washed the first time. It's baby blue and white variegated with a silky thread running through it.
The pattern is called a pin wheel blanket. It's a circular blanket with ten sections radiating out from the center. I've made several mistakes, but I figured this my practice. I think I'll try again with yarn that I really like. I saw some at the store the other day- I want it, it's cheap, but I told myself "Don't buy it! You don't have any more space for yarn in you closet!" I might have to buy it anyway. I hate it when I see a yarn I like, I don't buy it because I don't need any more yarn, but later, when I want to buy for something specific, it's gone.
The blanket is almost finished! I'm working on the border now. It will take a while, but I think it will look pretty cool. That's a 1+ year baby blanket. I must be the slowest knitter in history! Finally finishing up has put me in the mind to buy more needles to make another one. (A bigger one.) Of course the needles I want cost $140. They seem to be made out of gold . . . No just kidding, it is an interchangeable set of 8 or 10 pairs of needles and cables that hook them together to make big things like circular blankets. Some day . . . It will be me and a mountain of yarn and my fancy needles.

I just finished The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. When I started it everyone said, "you won't like that!" "It's so violent, so graphic . . ." blah blah- terrible, horrible, no good, very bad . . . Well, I finished it for the same reason I started it, I wanted to know what all the fuss was about. It seemed like every one was reading it, talking about it, talking about the movie about it . . . so I read it. It was ok. Not horrible, not terrific- just ok. I wonder what got everyone so worked up. I understand that there are two more books that continue the story and that there is some mystery as to the fate of the author and the manner of this death . . . I suppose I'll read the other two just to see what the fuss is all about.
In other news, no classes tomorrow! Yeah MLK Jr!
Someday I'd like to have a kitchen big enough to accommodate both a toaster oven and a conventional toaster.
I haven't made my new year resolutions yet. Some times it takes a while to think of something I might really want to commit to. I'm considering one to be Finishing my unfinished projects- but there has to be more, I mean I have a lot of unfinished projects. I finished two of them today (Yeah for me!) There's another on my dinning room table, two on my sofa, two on my chair, about 6 in my foot stool and three or four in my closet. Those are just yarn projects, I have fabric projects, photo projects, drawing projects, writing projects, work projects, etc. I expect that if I became agoraphobic and could never leave my apartment again it would not be a problem at all since I probably have enough projects to keep my busy for the rest of my days.
Time for bed. I've been very tired this weekend. I've been sleeping 10 hours in the night (and morning) and getting up, not because I felt refreshed., but because there is some shame attached to staying in bed all day for no good reason at all. I've clearly overcome any stigma attached to staying in the house and wearing my pjs all day- but with out any clear health reasons, I feel like I really should get out of bed.
I hope to finish my weekend project tomorrow, which is a brain bag. It's a little make-up sized bag with brain wrinkles all over it. I'll post a picture. I hope it will make me happy, as I'm making it for myself. I saw a picture of one someone made on line and I decided I could make that too. The wrinkles are mostly done. Now I just have to figure out how to put a zipper in a lined bag. I can do it.

This will be the year of the rabbit (on February 3) according to the Chinese Zodiac. For me, however, this will be the year of the sea creatures! SEA CREATURES!! Kracken- a fearsome monster of old. Leviathan- again fearsome- monster- old. The Lock Ness Monster . . . Yes, lock monsters too. Not just monsters though, fish and crustaceans and octopuses etc. which sometimes look like monsters, but are in fact just homely. Yeah!

I'm reading Jude the Obscure by Thomas Hardy. I have always really enjoyed Hardy in the past, but honestly, reading this book is like punishment. It's so bland and preachy. It's one of those books you want to know what the story is without actually having to read it. I only have about 120 pages left, so I'll finish. It is a very forward (for the the late 1800s) indictment against church and the institution of marriage.
To console myself on this punishment of bad Hardy, I've also started reading Coraline. I watched the moving thinking it was going to be a cute kid's movie. It was actually pretty creepy. The book somehow seems less creepy, but I'm not yet half way through and I don't really remember all the movie. It is interesting to me that the title character is never physically described. A few times the author has described her clothes in detail, but not her person. I like it.
I got a Kindle for my birthday and have really enjoyed it. I didn't have a complaint until last night when I couldn't read it because the battery was dead. Well, it is true, a real book never needs to be charged up. It is also true that I can't carry around 50 paperbacks like I can in a Kindle. I could probably carry around 800 paper backs in my Kindle- but I don't want to brag. :)

| Santa, Yoseph and me! |
I decorated for Christmas today. It's pretty minimal. While I love Christmas and Christmas decorations, I'm sort of lazy about decorating. I'm usually not where I live for actual Christmas, and I don't usually have many visitors. I don't really have that many decorations, and I have so much other junk that would need to be put away . . . I just scatter a few of my favorites around and call it done.
One of my favorites is the 'Elf on the shelf.' Although I always thought of him as the 'Elf in the Tree.' We had one when I was a kid, and he always sat right in the middle of our 3 foot tree. A few years ago I saw one just like the one we used to have and I bought it. A few years after that I saw the book Elf on a Shelf. Apparently this little guy is a spy in a network of Santa's spies letting him know who's been naughty and nice. Yes, he's sitting between pumpkins and near a crazy-eyed Santa.
One of my new favorites is this Mexican nativity. I bought it a few years ago on a trip pk and I took to visit uncle bk. I hadn't put it out before so it was still wrapped in it's Mexican newspaper wrapping. I was surprised to find a tiny plate of tacos included in the package. Ummmm . . . a gift from a Mexican wiseman?

Military dining halls with bible quotes on the walls? Beyond inappropriate. I still don't understand how this happens in a nation in which church and state are supposed to separate. How do they get away with this?

So a few weeks ago D go stung on the head by a wasp in the kitchen. Strange, but I didn't have alot of sympathy- I mean, it was just a sting. He said it hurt alot. I thought he was being a baby. I also thought it was kind of funny that he had a wasp problem in his kitchen.
Turns out there is a sizable nest in the wall between the brick and the drywall. This is bad news, as it's pretty hard to get to them. Additionally, every time anyone opens the cabinet under the sink or the dishwasher an angry wasp flies out. I was cooking a few days ago while D was doing the dishes. He likes to use the dish washer as a drying rack. Every time he opened the dish washer another wasp would fly out. Usually they go straight for the light and get stuck in the fixture. I didn't worry about them. I hadn't been stung by a wasp since I was about 9. Daniel, however, was quick to get out of the way when the wasps got close to him.
When we were finished in the kitchen we took our food and went out to the living room to watch baseball. After my second bite I felt something prickly in my shirt. I wacked it through my shirt, but not hard enough, the wasp which had sneaked into my shirt stung me about two inches below my collar bone just under my neck. Maybe it stung me a few times, or maybe I'm slightly allergic to wasp stings.
First the sting well, it stung; then it was sort of sore and swollen. I expected it to hurt some, but it hurt all evening and I even took some pain killers to tame it. The next morning it was very red and about 2 inches in diameter and slightly raised and VERY itchy. I tried not to scratch it because it was still a bit tender, but I had to rub it sometimes it was so itchy.
That afternoon D told me he had been out spraying the wasps and he got stung again on the back. He told me how big and sore his sting was. I told him mine was big and sore too. He said it wasn't like his, that his was terrible. I thought that must be pretty bad so I said, "let me see." His sting looked like a large mosquito bite, red and about the size of the tip of a pinky finger. So I showed him my giant, inflamed, crazy itchy sting site. He said, "Well, at least it's not swollen like mine." If I had a stinger I would have stung him myself for that remark.
Today the tenderness is gone, but the itchiness is full on. In my last apartment I used to get 'mystery bites.' I would get very similar looking marks on my legs, they weren't tender, but they were big and super itchy, but I never knew how I got them. I figured it was a spider near my bed or something. Maybe I was getting bit in my sleep.
These bites are so itchy that sometimes when I scratch them I feel like I know how dogs feel when you scratch them and they start thumping their legs and get that dazed look . . . like they are high or something. Some times I scratch and it feel so good I almost don't mind how annoying the itchiness is.

10/10/10
That was a strange suggestion from him, but I DID want to go to the pumpkin patch and get a pumpkin, so I decided to roll with it. On Thursday or Friday Daniel said, “Are we still on for the pumpkin patch? You want to do it Sunday after lunch?” I said, “sure.”
After lunch we headed just down the street to Gnismer Farms to pick my pumpkin. As soon as we pulled in I could see there was a problem. The pumpkin field was barren, desolate, plowed under, not a darn pumpkin in sight.
“What!? No Pumpkins!?"
This was a serious let down because for real, I wanted a pumpkin. Daniel said, “Well, let's go talk to the farmer and see if he has another field.”
The farmer said, “Oh yeah, sorry- all the pumpkins are gone. We had caterpillar problems this year, and what we did get in were all bought up the first weekend we opened.”
Blasted caterpillars . . .
Blasted caterpillars . . .
Then Farmer Gnismer helpfully suggested we explore the corn field maze. I grumbled about it for a while. “I don’t know, maybe we should just go find another pumpkin field . . ."
Daniel said, “Well, let’s try it, since we are here.”
I said, “Fine.”
The farmer's wife was very encouraging about the corn field maze.
She said, “Oh yeah, it will be fun, you’ll love it! We’ve hidden clues all over the field, you need to find all of them, then when you come out we’ll give you a quiz.”
Daniel said, “OK! But at least get these clues and we’ll turn around and go back in.”
So I went to the next “clue” which was on a bigger tag than the rest of the clues and read, “Shannon" I thought that was funny, but I got out my pen anyway, then I read the rest of the sentence, “Will you marry me. – Daniel” By the time I’d figured that out Daniel had moved in front of me and had knelt down with the ring box.
He asked some question and I said “YES!” He asked another question, I said, “YES!” to that one too.
I only vaguely remember that the questions were something like, “Will you be my pumpkin for ever?” and “Will you marry me?” Whatever- I already had the question in writing in my hand- YES! (He had planned on being in a pumpkin patch and asking me to be his 'corn on the cob for ever' doesn't have the same ring to it, so he stuck to the pumpkin plan- of course I had no idea at the time.)
When I looked up there was the farmer with his camera and all the people who had gone through the maze ahead of us. They had seen the sign and were hanging around to see what would happen next.
Someone asked if I cried; I didn’t because- a proposal in a corn field was a bit surreal . . . on the way in I was thinking about Children of the Corn, and that scene in X-files where they are running through the corn fields .. . . not about rings and proposals.
Daniel had planned on writing his message on a pumpkin so that I could find it in the field. But when he went to the farm on Friday he found out about the caterpillars and the lack of pumpkins, so he and the farmer and the farmer’s wife made this plan . . .
Daniel said he thought I was going to figure out what was going on because he had the ring box in his pocket and he thought I’d ask him about it (because I’m pretty curious) but I never noticed- I was concentrating on the pumpkins, and the corn clues.
The only strange thing I really noticed was that had tucked in his t-shirt and was wearing a belt to go to the pumpkin patch. Sort of formal for a pumpkin patch, I was wearing a T-shirt that said, “Zombie chick.”
I told him later that I should have known he was up to something because the date was 10/10/10 and he’s all about the numbers. He said he had originally planned to wait until Halloween, but he couldn’t pass up 10/10/10 as a once in a life time date. Also apparently 101010 in binary code = 42. 42 is the answer to the question to of "Life, the universe, and everything." 42My ring is custom designed and made. Daniel bought the opal 10 years ago thinking to use it as an engagement ring. It has 4 round white diamonds and 3 marquee blue diamonds. The third blue diamond is on the palm side of the band. There is a scrolled heart and our initials on each side of the back diamond. There are 8 stones all together because we met 8 years ago.

I was feeling sad today- so far the week has been going poorly. Monday I forgot to go to work, Tuesday I called to see if the agreement that I didn't have to go to work today was still on in light of Monday- to be informed that I had that wrong too- that I was supposed to come to work today for sure because the Assistant Director had the 14th and the 21st on her calendar while I had the 5th and the 28th on my calendar for days off. Strange . . . it doesn't seem like me to schedule days off so close to each other- I usually try to spread them out.
The more I thought about why I would have chosen those dates and written other dates on my calendar the more irritated I was with the situation. I decided to look up the email to see what went wrong. I learned I had said the 5th and the 28th- I don't know where the 14th and the 21st came in. Uhg- clearly none of us has very good memories.

The jig up at work- they're on to me! I had the easiest job in ever, for about 8 weeks. Well, take them as they come, I say. Easy come easy go.
For the past 6 weeks I've just had to show up for the majority of my work hours- ok there was some button pushing, some watching students push buttons, and a little bit of reading involved, but nothing outside of the work hours, which in absolutely heavenly as a teacher.
They just put it all together and decided that it doesn't take someone with a master's degree to push buttons and do a little bit of reading. (ie they don't have to pay the amount of money they are paying me to push buttons and watch students push buttons.) Bother.
To top it off I forgot to come to work this morning. Dang it all! I was supposed to fill in for the Assistant Director this morning, but I TOTALLY forgot. I showed up 20 minutes before my class, looked at my calendar and realized I was 40 minutes late for the class I was supposed to fill in for. I went to the class and all the students were just sitting there, at the computeres- watching Youtube, writing emails, etc. One said, "We have been alone." So I went in and told the Director that I'd messed up. He said, "Well, that just goes to prove that we don't really need anyone for that time slot, none of the students even came to the office to ask where their teacher was." SNAP! The students don't even care!
Uh- what does this mean for me? Well, it could mean far few hours at work. It could mean that I'll actually have to do "work" at work. I hope it's the second. I could stand do some work at work, but no work and no money would be so sad for me.

I got my teacher evaluations for the Summer. Generally they are good, of course there are always a few students who could apparently live without me. I get the feeling they won't be so good for the Fall semester on account of the class I'm teaching is . . . well . . . sort of boring . . . sometimes. There's a lot of repetition, and for those of us with the minute attention spans- I can see why they are frustrated with the program.
My favorite comment in Summer evaluations:
Q: Did the instructor teach the class in a way that helped you learn? Please explain.
A: Yes. She did. She explained the grammar that we didn't pay attention to.
Thank you very much.

Today at the grocery store a guy totally "How YOU doin'"-ed me. My first thought was "I've been Joey Tribbiani-ed!" But of course it wasn't a goofy Italian American New Yorker, it was a very large African American Fort Wother- Worthian- Worthite? Don't know. Whatever- as always, the brown men love me. Thank you for your support brown men.

I made oven pancakes today for breakfast. They looked like slightly over done giant brains, but they tasted pretty good with blueberry syrup. I got the recipe from a stack of cards and papers I've been moving about with me for who knows how long. I think I got this card when I bought a whole box of 70s era recipes from Salvation Army. This one is dated 1975, and is from a collection called "Mainstays Without Meat."

Ronald and Nancy Reagan looking too cute with their babies. Isn't he just so Hollywood? Isn't she TV-land domestic? EEEK! I love it!
Here's why I notice:
1. The internet is amazing-obviously
2. I have a follower- I don't know who you are follower (Not Jayme, I know you) this follower is also a follower of another blog- I looked at the other blog which is written by a history professor- who had a post about ugly presidents- he/she said Martin Van Buren was the ugliest present and LBJ was number 2. I agree about Van Buren- but I'm not convinced about LBJ- so I went looking for ugly on Google. Instead I found super cute!

Currently reading Julie and Julia which was recently a movie. She's a salty gal. Sometimes I read these books and wonder what it is that makes publishers and people think that this piece of writing is something special that will sell. I don't think this because it is bad or poorly written, but it is basically just a memoir of a Joe-Blow-Nobody. So this woman decides to cook Julia Child's French recipes all year, and keep a blog about it. Eh.
It makes me think that if I decided to do something all year I could write a book about it. The problems being of course that with my gnat like attention span I don't know of anything that I can commit to for a year and me thinking the whole time, even if I did convince myself to do such a thing, "who cares?!"
Then how much money does one really make on such a venture? What expectations result from success? Would they want more? If I were to write a book, I'm pretty sure there's only one in there.
I've read books about people who read the encyclopedia all year, who lived by all the biblical rules for a year, cooking for a year- auto biographies about childhood, dog ownership, travel adventures etc. I have a friend keeping a blog about losing half her body weight. That's determination. First deciding to do such a thing, then keeping up with it by writing about it each day.
Do I have it? Would anyone (including me) care if I did? I took a long-long-long test in exchange for writing a Master's dissertation. What could I do so that I'd have enough material to write a book about it? I heard a guy talking about taking a job in Antarctica so that when he was done he'd have a bunch of money (since he couldn't spend it in Antarctica.)and he could travel up through South and Central America and then illegally cross into the US, just to see how it felt. Me: Antarctica? No- the plan is over. That's too cold.

Any suggestions- send them my way.
I have a computer in every room. That would be embarrassing if they all worked. The one in my bedroom won’t connect to the internet. The one in the office connects but very slowly. It is also a dinosaur in computer years. The one in the living room is a laptop but I can’t move it around because it has no battery life and the charger doesn’t connect to the computer right, so sometimes it just shuts down when you least expect it. I only use it to watch TV and movie downloads because 1. My TV gets 3 stations, one public television station and two Mexican stations. (Odd since I live about 3 blocks from the CBS tower.) I don’t know if it’s the antenna or the digital converter box that has the problem. I don’t want to buy a new converter box, but I don’t want to buy a new TV if I’m only going to get 3 stations. 2. My DVD player is broken, there is sound, but no picture.
The computer in the dining room is pretty good though.
I plan to get some really long wires to run from the living room into the bedroom and the office so I can have internet everywhere. Yes, technically I have wireless, but obviously it’s not that great if it can’t reach from the living room (which is the only room it will connect in) to the bedroom, just down the hall.
I made some whole wheat bread today. Just another spike in the coffin of the corn industry- ha! I didn’t use any high fructose corn syrup! Like I care.
I think I'm going to knit some corn on the cob, give it a tiny turban, a white 'corn silk' beard, and a itty-bitty bomb belt. I shall call it Al Maiza. It will be a cob bomber.
My microwave died this weekend. What’s up with the dead devices? I actually had to heat my lunch up on the stove! Uhgh! It reminded me of when I was a kid. Being the late bloomers that we were, (I still am) we didn’t have a microwave or a VCR until I was in high school. Awkward. I didn’t have a CD player or a personal computer until after college. I didn’t get my driver’s license or my first car until I was 23. Foolishly I got my license, bought a car and drove across the country in the same month.
Now I don’t have a CD player, a DVD player, or a microwave, but I do have a VCR (that I bought in 1999) and an analogue TV (that I bought in 2004,) four computers and a hybrid car (with which I could drive across the county for $100.) Things have changed some, not much. Guess I should save up the money I’m saving in gas and buy a new microwave and DVD player- and maybe a TV . . .

I’ve been having trouble getting to sleep the last few nights. That’s unusual for me, sleep is normally one of the things I rather enjoy. I would like to say that I was good at it, but the truth is that I’m a terribly light sleeper. I wake up at sounds, lights, movement. I wake up for no apparent reason many times a night, to roll over or shift positions. Generally though, as long as there’s nothing bothering me (externally, like someone snoring, or a bright light, etc) I go right back to sleep. Same thing at bed time, while I’m not the best sleeper, I generally go to sleep easily enough (given the right circumstances.)
Ok, it turns out that I’m pretty picky about how, when and where I sleep. Dang it!
My toilet is burbling.
I’ve started reading a book called New Age Bible Versions: An Exhaustive Documentation Exposing the Message, Men and Manuscripts Move Mankind to the Antichrist’s One World Religion. Now, that is a mouthful! I bought this book at a thrift store several years ago. It’s basically a “Kings James Only” manifesto. I got it because I was genuinely interested in why some people insist on KJV only. Yeah, it does sound cool, but I really enjoy many of the other versions. I have a vague idea of how translators and editors come up with different versions, why they have different phrases and grammar structures, why different vocabulary is used when they are all to mean the same thing.
I wonder what other language has such a lot of Biblical translation versions as English.
I looked up the Amazon reviews on this book before I started reading. I’ve gotten into the habit of seeing what other people think about a book. I don’t read many of the reviews, I just look at the numbers. How many people have reviewed this book? What are the percentages with 4-5 stars and the percentages with 3 and with 1-2 stars. This current book, has over 100 reviews split almost perfectly down the middle with 5 stars and 1 stars and just a very few 2-4s. I read two 1 star reviews. Those folks sounded pretty informed and said, while it was researched and documented, it seemed more like the author was a conspiracy theorist and if she knew more about Biblical languages she would be in a much better position to analyze the original material herself and come to more informed conclusions.
I wish I knew more about Biblical languages. Forgetting sucks, I studied Biblical Greek once . . .
I started reading this book and by the time I got to page 22 I wrote the number 27 at the top of the page. That is 27 mistakes; grammatical, logical, untruths- not to mention the lies of omition and decontextualization. It was just silly. I’m not a scholar- but even I could pick out that silliness. I put it down for the night. I decided to sleep on it to decide if it was worth my time to read it. (For some reason once a book comes into my possession, I feel obligated to read it.)
This evening I decided to go for chapter two after all. I’d been writing comments and marking the text with a purple colored pencil as I read last night, I decided I sort of enjoyed arguing with this book. I haven’t had a good argument with a book in a long time. It is introducing many interesting things I didn’t know about as well. It mentions the names of the manuscripts, church fathers, cult leaders, Bible version editors, and it does have some very interesting ideas about the coming of the antichrist.
I've read several interesting book this year- if only the Zombies weren't currently monopolizing my time, I'd have more to say about all those books.

I want a sharpie liquid pencil!
I love Sharpie brand. So what if it does bleed through the paper- it's so vibrant, which makes dull lives more exciting! If that's all it took right?
I'm considering the fact that I may need a satallite radio.
I need to go grocery shopping because I just ate something weird for lunch. Possibly the goal of my diet is "less wierd." That has not been definitively defined.
I think my dog wants to break up with me. Boo! He's been staying with the BF while I was jobless/homeless. The BF has a 'magic door' to the outside, (doggie door)and his little doggie buddy, Louie. I've got a carpet he's not allowed to pee on, no magic door, no Louie, a leash he always has to wear outside, and a box I make him sleep in at night. (It's for his own good.) I think the only reason he comes home with me sometimes is because he likes the car ride.
Buzz come home!

I forgot how long two hours on the same subject with the same students can be . . . this requires a plan of action. I hate it when I bore myself in class.
The weather has changed for a few days- a 'cold front' came in and cooled us down by 20 degrees. Now it's only 90 instead of 109!
Buzz went to the dog park today and didn't bite anybody! That's a big step for him. Not that he didn't want to bite someone, but I talked him out of it each time.

What the heck!
Didn't that dang dentist take all four wisdom teeth?! It feels like there is another one trying to grow in the bottom left! I've been trying to pretend it's not happening, but it's getting harder. This must be a sign of a fifth measure of wisdom which is rarely possessed. Or maybe I just have a gum infection.
I just looked up 'gum pain' and found one dentist suggesting it could be a broken root tip irritating my gum or a 'migrating jaw bone fragment.' Well, I should think not to the latter.
I'm headed to Wal-Mart AGAIN. W-D 40 and hanging shoe organizers.

I officially have internet- ie I'm no longer stealing it from neighbors. I don't know if it's really stealing though if they just leave it lying around for anybody to pick up . . . Of course my internet doesn't work in the office, where the desk top computer is, it only works in the living room, where the ages old lap top is. I'll have to call about that.
I think the rest of August and going forward into the holiday season I need to have a consolidation plan. No more buying stuff, more getting rid of stuff. The problem is that buying stuff is kind of fun. Unfortunately I have lots of stuff I haven't used.
I was considering last night the uncommon pleasure I get from using all of something. Little things like all the ink out of a ball point pen. It's silly, a pen that was probably free- but I feel far more satisfied with a pen that has truly run out of ink than with one that has just stopped working. I like using scraps of fabric and yarn, I love getting to the end of a tube of lipstick, or reading a book and sending it on its way to the next reader. (Although that last one can be kinda sad it if was a really good book.)
So, it's time to see the end of more things. The end of the yards and yards of fabric in my closet, the end of the boxes and baskets of yarn, the end of the collection of make up I've had since the dawning of history. The end of the stack of ESL books, and cook books, and kids books, the end of bags and purses I don't use, shoes I don't wear and clothes that don't fit. The end is near.

My summer vacation is almost over! Boo! I was laying in bed this morning thinking about how great it was to have a do nothing vacation. I mean I love a go out and explore vacation too, but when I travel I feel obligated to get up and do stuff I wouldn't normally have a chance to do.
Didn't go anywhere, didn't do anything (except watch the complete season 1 of X-files)
Good-good.

I went to a shop called ‘The Metaphysical Shoppe’ today. I pass it pretty regularly and I wondered what exactly a metaphysical shop sold. Turns out they sell incense. I think the incense burned my nose hairs. After I walked out I could smell incense for two hours. There were all kinds of devilish things in there, pentagram pendants, pagan prayer books, Buddhas and a myriad of Hindu gods. I didn’t feel completely creeped out until I saw the pentagram emblazoned hooded cloaks though. The young man working there was extremely friendly and chatty. He studies anthropology at a local college-blahdy-blahdy-blah. He was an average looking dude, but he had the most amazing color of eyes. They were a beautiful deep green-blue, sort of like the Gulf of Mexico on the south Florida coast. I hope his babies get those eyes.
I’ve been having some strange dreams these last few nights.
I dreamed I was almost attacked by a swamp monster. It looked like a very large, kinda cute iguana. I was admiring it as I ambled across a walking bridge over the swamp when it stood up on its hind legs (which were man length) and started coming for me. Maybe it just wanted to be friends, but when a man sized lizard starts coming at you- well, at least I run for it. It reminded me greatly of the scenario with the attack squirrel in DC.
I dreamed my boyfriend suggested we get married in Applebee’s. I said no. We settled on the ice-skating rink, as long as the swamp monster wasn’t invited.
I dreamed Wonder Woman was originally from the Louisiana swamps. She just spread the story about being an Amazon because that sounded cooler than being a Cajun.
I dreamed that I went to a new church and upon entering the church all my (major) faults and mistakes were listed for everyone to hear. I think I’d rather be in a swamp, with a monster.
I dreamed I ran into an old friend at another friend’s house. That’s pretty tame compared with the rest. It did lead to a whole day of wondering about that old friend though . . . and swamps.

How do dogs know exactly where you don't want them to be? I have two chairs and a sofa but my little dog and his visiting friend decided to curl up in my seat as soon as I got up. My stinky little Frito dog will always find the best pillow, the clean clothes basket or my favorite blanket to curl up in/on.
I love having a kitchen, and a sofa.
I'm still not finished organizing all my stuff.
My goal is to use up the stuff I have before I start stock piling goods. Seriosly, I had four bottles of shampoo when I moved in January. I still have four bottles of shampoo. I have alot of hair, but not that much!

I want to write blogs, but I keep getting distracted by the stupid news stories to be found on MSN. "Waitress fired for comment on Facebook." Duh, tard, if you use your company name and insult their customers- it's a safe bet they won't like that. Prince is being sued for painting his rental house purple, Prince is being sued for canceling a concert in Dublin, Prince is being sued for a multiplicity of other things- sucks to be Prince.
We just finished Testing for the Summer session, TGTO- Thank God That's Over! It is all computerized testing, and there were literally students in tears screaming at their computers in an effort to complete the test. Not screaming because they were angry, just in an effort to be understood. What a mess.
So I was driving the other day, late for a meeting when I heard a loud POP-SMACK-HISS!!! In the hatchback. I thought something was going bad wrong with my car- I'd never heard anything like that before, but I'm driving a hybrid who knows what crazy things might happen. All the hair on the back of my head stood on end- now I know how my dog feels when he gets freaked out.
Before I pulled over to investigate I realized that one of the cans in the case of sodas I'd bought the day before had exploded. No problem, I figured it was still in the case, and if the case was right side up, the soda that wasn't on my back window as probably still in the can.
When I pulled over I realized things had been happening while I was at work. The temperature has been over 100 all week- all but four of the cans had exploded. They had exploded out of the case, like rockets, they were all over the back of the car. The carpet was soaked. There was diet cherry 7-Up all over the windows, the carpet, the back of the seats. One can had exploded so hard it scratched the factory tinting off the window. Not cool. So, I knew that I had to empty the ones that hadn't exploded so that I didn't get an even bigger mess. I picked up the first unexploded can. It immediately exploded all over my shirt. I emptied out the remainder of the can in the parking lot. I picked up the second unexploded can, it immediately exploded all over my pants. I emptied the remainder of the can in the grass. I picked up the third unexploded can, carefully pointing it away from me. It seemed a little more stable than the first too, but as I went to press on the tab, the top popped up and jammed my thumb hard, so I dropped it on the ground, and it exploded all over my shoes. I picked up the forth unexploded can threw it down on the ground and ran away screaming.
Needless to say I did not make it to my appointment.
When I cleaned out the car later I found one can under the front seat- I don't even want to know how it got there. On a good note I also found a ring I had forgotten I'd lost.

AHH! My blog is working correctly again!
I'm almost done moving everything into my new 'kitchen included' apartment. It's a 'mixed neighborhood' which means I'm the only one around here driving a Prius, because white people like Priuses (it's # 60 on the list of "Things White People Like.") I didn't make it up.
I have man furniture, which was cheap so I can't complain much. Who knows how much flatulence has been absorbed by my reclining sofa and two reclining chairs. I'm going to Fabreeze them.
I have a whole room I can't even get into for all the stuff piled in and around it- instead of beginning the the long process of organizing that stuff, I finished my book, My Sister's Keeper, which was tragical.
Eventually I'll have to buy real sheets and take my sock monkey sheet off my new bed. The only defect of my new bed is a squeak in one of the legs when I roll over. Nothing a little W-D 40 can't fix.
The thumping beat of the car base outside my window matches my heart beat- how annoying.
I've got to get a picture of the "OMG Donuts!" sign.
I stapled a camel blanket to my window to block out the security lighting. I suppose that will eventually go the way of the sock money sheet. I should grow up and get real curtains.
I had ice-cream and potato chips and cherries for dinner. I'm starting a diet Monday.
You spin me right round baby-right-round-round-round.

I'm in la-love with this chair I've been furniture shopping. What a hassle. I've narrowed it down to two living room sets I find acceptable. And I want this chair. This chair costs $800- wow. That's a lot for a chair. But it is so-so comfy and pretty.
I was approved for my apartment, move in date Friday. (yeah!) However, I don't have any furniture except book shelves.

I just wrote a long blog about my adventures in apartment hunting, but like many other writings, it is gone in the virtual wind. My blog still isn't right.
Summery:
Good news- I think I've found an apartment I like for an awesome price, aside from it being on 'the wrong side of town' I think it will be great.
Bad news- it took a lot of looking to come across a place that seems ok-
The ladies I'm renting from now are super nice, but making me a bit crazy with the minutia- won't be sad to go!
Bowling field trip tomorrow! 'That's like Pow-pow-pow!' (as Usher would say) What else can you say about 9:00 AM bowling with a bunch of foreign university kids?

Usher has a new song- I don't know what Usher does that makes me like him, but it's something about how ridiculous and at the same time catchy his songs are.
OMG (Oh my gosh) Why not 'Oh my God?' I don't know- Is it okay to fornicate, adulterate etc, but he's serious about the first few commandments? Whatever- I like it.
My favorite part of the lyrics:
I fell in love with shawty when I seen her on the dance floor
She was dancing sexy, pop, pop, popping, dropping, dropping low
Never ever has a lady hit me on the first sight
This was something special; this was just like dynamite
Honey got a booty like pow, pow, pow
Honey got some boobies like wow, oh wow
Girl you know I’m loving your, loving your style
She was dancing sexy, pop, pop, popping, dropping, dropping low
Never ever has a lady hit me on the first sight
This was something special; this was just like dynamite
Honey got a booty like pow, pow, pow
Honey got some boobies like wow, oh wow
Girl you know I’m loving your, loving your style
I like the use of the past participle. Past participles need more play time. I like that use of 'booty' and 'boobies' together. What grown man says 'boobies' to the world? It's good alliteration though. I like that he rhymed 'pow' 'wow' and amazingly 'style.' That can't be easy on paper.
There's something wrong with my blog. I hasn't let me post for several days now. It lets me look at other posts, edit other posts, post on other blogs, but to post on this one I have to post an empty post, then go back and edit it. (and it took me 30 minutes to figure that one out)
I'm trying to complain less, but really sometimes other complainers get on my nerves. A while back I was watching some news report and the anchor was giving a story about how Americans should be outraged by the fact the US government borrows their over paid taxes all year interest free. My thought was, 'Why should I be outraged by that? Shouldn't I be glad to do a little to help my country?"
OK the government isn't perfect- people are corrupt- they try to use you, sometimes life sucks. Sometimes you have to complain to be heard, to get what's right done. Sometimes you need to stop complaining and see what is good- what is valuable- how to be helpful, useful. Nobody talks about sacrifice-service-patriotism much any more.
I suppose we're going down America- so we will have lots more to complain about soon.
